Broxtowe College , Nottingham
2005

Broxtowe College has operated from its Chilwell centre in Nottingham for 53 years. In that time, through major changes in the further education sector, the site had become over-crowded, poorly laid out and with some facilities unfit for the range of courses now being provided. The college wished to create a facility fit for the 21st Century and have a landmark building that staff and students could be proud of.

As part of the ongoing improvements to Broxtowe College the first phase to be completed was the new teaching block.

The new three storey classroom block was developed on the north west side of the existing college, replacing temporary accommodation. The new block links to the existing college at ground floor level and houses a central staff lounge, head of department offices, and a purpose-built open plan office that is lit and ventilated by a north facing skylight. There is good use of natural lighting throughout.

The classroom block is clad in a striking combination of white render, varying shades of grey and red brick, and natural cedar wood.

Outside, a small landscaped courtyard has been created between the new and existing buildings to provide a welcome sheltered seating area for both staff and students.
