Tim McArtney

Studied at the Architectural Association where he was the Gleeson Scholar, he developed an early interest in designing for education. He graduated in 1968 and taught at Loughborough University Department of Education helping to evolve a new course for training design teachers. He was co-author of one of the first books on the impact of IT an education environments "Learning with New Media".

In 1971 he joined Nottinghamshire County Architects Department under an inspirational County Architect, Henry Swain, where he gained valuable experience in public sector architecture and was responsible for several schools and social services buildings.

In 1973 he joined Leonard Multon & Partners a private practice specialising in medical buildings and helped to design the first stage development of the new Derby General Hospital. In 1975 the project was cancelled and he left to set up his own practice with a partner, Andrew James. Together they formed the James McArtney Partnership which has evolved over 25 years and through several amalgamations to become Crampin Pring McArtney Gant - CPMG.

Throughout his career Tim McArtney has been active in architectural education and in RIBA matters. He chaired the Nottingham and Derby Society of Architects in 1979 - 81 and was a member of RIBA Regional Council for five years.

He taught at the Architectural Association and Nottingham University School of Architecture as an external tutor from 1975 - 1978.He is currently an external examiner for the RIBA Part 3 post graduate examination at Nottingham University and De Montfort University Schools of Architecture.

He represents the Practice as a director of the Wren Mutual Assurance Company which provides professional indemnity insurance for its architect members.

Tim McArtney's objectives have been to create an "all round" architectural design practice which encompasses the whole range of building types across both public and private sectors. Today CPMG is one of the major practices in the East Midlands recognised for the quality of its designs and the attention paid to providing first rate service to its clients. It was the first Nottinghamshire practice to attain ISO9001 Quality Assurance accreditation with BSI in 1994.

His experience in designing major building schemes is extensive and includes the following sectors:

· Education-university, colleges and schools
· Offices-HQ, IT and regional offices
· Bookstores-14 major bookstores throughout the UK
· Hospitals -clinical and non clinical departments
· Residential   luxury apartment complexes
· Refurbishment and listed building conservation
· Urban renewal and town centre schemes

He believes firmly that in order to get the best buildings for his clients there needs to be a totally integrated design process which can only be achieved through dedicated teamwork.

Tim's other interests include painting and drawing, opera, rugby, cricket and wine and food.

He has exhibited at galleries in Nottingham and Suffolk.
