SCHOOLS TAKE PRIORITY IN GROWING CPMG EDUCATION PORTFOLIO

Nottingham based CPMG architects has boosted its education portfolio after being appointed as lead designers on its second batch of schools under the Priority Schools Building Programme (PSBP) in the East of England which will be delivered by Wates Construction.

The £33m contract was awarded by the Department for Education to Wates to deliver the rebuild of six schools across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire and Kent, this adds to the Midlands batch awarded in February that CPMG are also working on. CPMG will be working closely with Wates, the Education Funding Agency and the schools to develop designs for the new facilities ahead of the building works.

CPMG is also working with Wates on the £16m new build of The Quest Academy in South Croydon that has just been granted planning permission. CPMG has utilised the innovative ADAPT school building model it developed with Wates to design the new school and sixth form building. The project was procured under the National Academies Framework, and CPMG worked with the Wates team to help secure the contract in a competitive tender which demonstrated the key benefits of using the ADAPT model, including the facilitation of a 21% reduction in build programme and cost savings on average 23% against a typical BSF building.

Construction for all of these projects will take place during 2013 and are due for completion in 2014.

Sara Harraway, Director at CPMG Architects said, "Our education portfolio has grown significantly this year, and we're delighted to be working on these exciting projects with Wates and to be having a part in changing the face of schools that will benefit so many students across the UK. The Adapt School Solutions is proving to be a very attractive option for both the schools, in terms of bespoke design, and local authorities, with the assurance of cost certainty and delivery to challenging programmes."

Peter Whitmore, Business Unit Director for Wates Construction, Northern Home Counties and East, commented: "We are delighted to have been named as the main contractor for the East batch of the Priority Schools Building Programme. Addressing the urgent need for the building works requires a lean and efficient approach and we have worked hard with CPMG and the EFA to make certain that this is achieved, whilst also ensuring that the new facilities provide exceptional learning environments fit for 21st century education."

CPMG-DESIGNED AIRPORT TOWER CROWNED ‘PROJECT OF THE YEAR'

Nottingham based CPMG Architects is celebrating today after the Air Traffic Control Tower they designed for Birmingham Airport was crowned ‘Project of the Year' and won a further award for ‘Regeneration' project of the year, at the RICS West Midlands Awards 2013.

The Airport received the two gongs at a ceremony held last night (May 1) at The National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham, where the West Midlands' most impressive property schemes battled it out for an industry ‘Oscar'.

The prestigious annual contest celebrates inspirational initiatives in the land, property and construction sectors, and has recognised the important part that the Airport's developments play in supporting the region's economy.

The highly acclaimed Project of the Year title is presented to the scheme which demonstrates overall outstanding best practice. The Air Traffic Control facility at Birmingham Airport triumphed over what the panel of judges described as extremely tough competition, winning not only the overall title but also the ‘Regeneration' category.

CPMG worked closely with the airport to create a building that combines iconic design with essential functionality. The stunning seven storey structure stands at 34 metres and has been an ambitious project in construction terms. Having been constructed without a supporting steel frame, it is one of the tallest un-stayed control towers in the UK. The tower's strength and stability comes instead from a slip form concrete process, which involved the project team pouring concrete continuously for ten days while the cab was prefabricated off-site and installed.

Chris White, Group Director of CPMG said: "We're delighted that the Birmingham Airport Air Traffic Control Tower has received this prestigious award, we are extremely proud of this iconic building which will be a significant part of the skyline for many years to come."

Receiving the award on behalf of Birmingham Airport, Will Heynes, the Airport's Development Director said: "We're honoured to have won these two awards. The new ATC tower is a significant and vital investment that supports our vision to provide the Midlands with global connectivity, and a facility where airlines choose to operate and passengers prefer to fly from.

"It has rejuvenated the western part of the airfield and is an impressive, modern and iconic landmark for Birmingham that has triggered further development projects at this part of the site, helping to create new jobs and play a vital role in supporting the economic success of Midlands."

Opened just in the last few days, the new ATC tower is equipped with state of the art radar and navigation equipment and gives Controllers better views of the airfield, above buildings that have been developed over the last few years. It will also allow them to see the end of the extended runway, a development that will be complete in early 2014 and will allow airlines to fly to more long haul destinations worldwide.

Commenting on the facility, Chair of the RICS West Midlands Awards judging panel Roger Stone, a Chartered Surveyor and Land Agent, said: "Birmingham Airport's Air Traffic Control tower ticked all the boxes for the RICS judges. This iconic building is part of a scheme that will bring business people to Birmingham and the West Midlands from parts of the world that we currently do not serve. The state-of-the-art control tower is at the centre of on-going works that will provide a huge economic boost for the region."

The new £10m tower has replaced the previous 79ft facility that has been in use since 1939 when the original terminal opened.
The construction was delivered by Morgan Sindall.
The project will now automatically be entered into the national RICS Awards, where they will compete against other leading projects from across the UK later this year.

VOLUNTEERS RETURN FROM AFRICAN SCHOOL BUILDING EXPEDITION

CPMG Architect Samantha Worrall and a team of second year architecture students have just returned from two weeks in Africa where they were helping to complete the University of Nottingham's ‘Project Limpopo' to build a nursery school in Calais.

The team were extending the original building that was completed in 2011 with the addition of a kitchen and dining facility and more classrooms. Over the two weeks the team completed a range of works including; building and erecting 5 timber trusses as part of the dining facility, beginning to build the kitchen/store, completing the setting out for the two new classrooms, designing, building and installing fencing, creating new signage, planning and designing the drainage system for the site - for this the team enlisted the help of locals to help dig this out!

They also created a butterfly garden to encourage the local wildlife, re-designed and relocated the playground and designed landscaping in front of the building.

Sam said, "Being a part of the Aga Sikolo build was a fantastic and unforgettable experience and I feel lucky to have been involved in such a worthwhile project, organised by the University of Nottingham. Our team got the chance to meet the teachers and children of the nursery who were so appreciative of all the kind donations and hard work going into building the facility. Our team worked exceptionally hard and I'm proud of the enthusiasm, dedication and positive team effort displayed."

The trip was the culmination of months of work by the students who have designed the scheme as part of their studies
The design and construction of the extended facilities is being funded by money raised by architecture students and staff at the University of Nottingham, who are working with Education Africa to deliver the project.

The University of Nottingham has so far raised over £30,000 to fund the completion of the school. For more information or to donate visit www.agasikolo.org

CPMG GETS GREEN LIGHT ON FIRST MAJOR WASTE SCHEME

Nottingham based CPMG architects have had the go ahead on their first major waste project after securing the contract to design a new residual waste treatment facility in Wakefield.

CPMG are working in partnership with Kier, the principle contractor on the project, to deliver the new plant at South Kirkby which will be able to process up to 230,000 tonnes of municipal waste each year. The contract has come after Shanks Waste Management signed a 25-year, £750m PFI deal with Wakefield Council.

CPMG has been involved in the master planning of the four sites across this project for the past 7 years and will be designing the family of buildings required for the new facility which includes a new visitor centre providing offices and staff facilities that will become a local hub for education and the promotion of waste minimisation. CPMG will be including sustainable features to achieve a BREAAM rating.

The new plant will produce a refuse derived fuel for processing at a multi fuel plant being built at the Ferrybridge power station. An on site materials recycling facility will separate out the clean mixed recyclate materials to be used by specialist markets.

The remaining organic waste will be converted into green energy using a state-of-the-art Autoclave which will sterilise the material before it goes through Anaerobic digestion to be converted into biogas. It is estimated that this process will generate sufficient green energy to power approximately 3,000 homes.

There will also be an enclosed air controlled composting plant for green waste and a Household Waste Recycling Centre on site.

The secondary sites include the rebuilding of the existing Household Waste Recycling Centre and Transfer Loading Station in Wakefield and a new Household Waste Recycling Centre at Glasshoughton.

Richard Thorpe, Senior Designer at CPMG is leading the project, he said: "We have been pursuing opportunities in the waste and green energy sectors for a number of years so we're delighted that Wakefield has been given the go ahead. The project involves a number of exciting sustainable waste solutions that will help the council meet challenging landfill targets and promote recycling to the wider community. The waste and energy sectors are ones we are keen to develop further and this project provides an opportunity to broaden the scope of our services."

The new facility has been designed with the needs of the local community in mind with specially designed screening and landscaping. Special access routes are also being incorporated to allow for local employees to be able to walk to work.

Work has just started on site and is due for completion in March 2015 and fully operational in September 2015.

WORK BEGINS ON SCHOOL REFURBISHMENT IN NOTTINGHAM

Wates Construction has commenced work on the £5.2m renovation of Forest Fields Primary School on Bradgate Road, marking a significant step forward in Nottingham City Council's school expansion programme.

The work, which is due for completion in December 2013, will see the school grow from a two-form entry to a three-form entry facility, increasing its capacity from 420 to 630 pupils.

The project will include the extensive refurbishment of The Berridge Centre on Stanley Road, which will be converted to become a 1,610 sq m four-storey extension to the existing school buildings.

Designed by Nottingham-based CPMG Architects, work on the Grade II listed Berridge Centre will include 12 new classrooms, a school hall, IT suite and administration offices. The project will also include the refurbishment of the existing school building, which will remain open throughout the works.

Upgraded facilities will also include extensive external landscaping and the creation of an outdoor play area, which will be shared by the school and Forest Fields Community Centre. Work on the project is due to complete in December this year.

Councillor David Mellen, Nottingham City Council's Portfolio Holder for Children's Services, said: "This is an exciting major investment in the Forest Fields area of the City, not just for the school, but for the whole community. Refurbishing the Victorian Grade II listed Berridge Centre, along with the existing school buildings, will significantly enhance the whole community, from the improvements to the ‘street scene' and landscaping as well as allowing more places for pupils to access this very popular school".

Andy Hand, Business Manager for Wates Construction, Midlands, commented: "The Berridge Centre is a structure of local importance and we are delighted to be applying our 40 years of heritage expertise to create an exceptional educational facility. As population rises it is necessary to commission the expansion of school buildings and Forest Fields is a great example of how this can be done by incorporating an existing building, particularly one which has a rich history in education."

Nick Gregory, Director at CPMG said, "This is one of a number of educational projects we're working on nationally with Wates, but it's particularly exciting being in our home city. We have worked on several historic premises in Nottingham and are delighted to help inject new life into this lovely old building - it will benefit the community as a whole and provide a wonderful environment for the local children for many years to come."

Built in 1895, The Berridge Centre is a former grammar school building, which closed in 1985. Following this it was occupied by Clarendon College, now New College Nottingham. Nottingham City Council purchased the property in December 2010.

The project was procured via the East Midlands Property Alliance (empa) framework, managed by Scape. Scape is a local authority controlled company set up to help public sector clients save time and money in delivering their construction projects.

Alan Coole, Scape's Development Director, added: "The empa framework not only allows for the quick and efficient procurement of public building works, but does so whilst bringing with it a host of significant local benefits - such as generating local employment and skills development opportunities. We are delighted to see Wates commence work on this flagship building and seeing the positive impact it will make to the young people of Nottingham."

Throughout the project Wates has pledged to utilise the works as a catalyst for local economic benefit through the appointment of Nottingham-based suppliers and sub-contractors.

The contractor has also committed to providing a raft of on-site work experience opportunities as well as creating three apprentice positions, which will be appointed through the Nottingham City Employer Hub.

NEW LOOK STAFFORD COLLEGE OPENS ITS DOORS

Stafford College has opened the doors of its new multi-million pound building to students after a complete re-design to create professional standard facilities.

The new look Stafford College was designed by CPMG Architects who created a building to house the college's Learning Resource Centre, beauty, hospitality and IT departments, alongside a café, bistro and restaurant for public use and students training.

The 5,200m² three storey building sweeps around the site in a dramatic curve, and is connected to an existing Grade II listed building via an impressive atrium. Materials have been selected to respond to the location with red brick and solar control protected curtain walling to the public face and light reflecting cladding to the campus side. Ground floor colonnades are used as a modern reference to collegiate traditions and provide solar shading and protected walkways and outdoor seating areas. BAM were the main contractor and the project took 18 months to complete.

CPMG also undertook all the interior design for the project to create professional standard facilities that will be attractive for the public to use. The college has been given a ‘boutique hotel' style using neutral coloured materials and metallic wallpaper for a contemporary feel. Bright accent colours have been carried throughout the college to provide a cohesive look with yellows, purples and hot pinks featuring in furniture, shelving and floorcoverings. The beauty salons feature darker colours and dimmer lighting to create an ambient luxury spa feel.

David Glazebrook, director of CPMG commented: "We are delighted to have designed this major new building for the college which provides a strong urban presence and encloses a new landscaped heart to the campus. The bright, contemporary interior really provides students and the local community with stunning, professional standard surroundings where people will want to spend time.

Environmental building services consultancies Couch Perry & Wilkes has designed the building services scheme to transform Stafford College into a low carbon campus. GVA were the project managers on the scheme and BWB the structural engineers.

Planning has recently been secured for the development of a new sports hall at Ecclesbourne School in Duffield which will significantly improve sports facilities for pupils and the local community.

Ecclesbourne School is a highly successful and popular secondary school and sixth form that currently has 1420 pupils on roll. After undertaking a detailed analysis of the current buildings and sports facilities the school decided this could be significantly improved, Head Teacher James McNamara explains; "Our staff and students have made the best of inadequate sporting facilities for many years and the new sports complex, with an anticipated opening date during 2013, will be an important improvement to our provision for the school and the community. Given the already impressive record of sporting excellence at our School we have good reason to expect even better in future years"

The new building has been designed by CPMG Architects working with MDA, Couch Perry and Wilkes and BWB Consulting. The first phase of the expansion will be the creation of a new Sport England standard, four-court sports hall. The single level sports hall will include a fitness suite, dance studio and PE classroom with changing and support facilities and a café style seating area in the main entrance for relaxation and socialising.

CPMG has designed this building to offer a bright, spacious, welcoming environment for users. The design features double height glazing to create light and transparency, a dramatic sweeping roofline, feature panels of timber cladding and incorporates graphics of sporting activities on the exterior walls. Work on this building is due to start in September with completion planned for next summer.

Hugh Avison, Group Director at CPMG Architects says; "With the Olympics putting sport into the spotlight, we're particularly pleased this project has been given the go ahead as it will provide access to high quality facilities for pupils and the local community. The buildings have been designed to be both practical and attractive, providing a comfortable, contemporary environment where people can train, compete and enjoy. I think the facilities will be an excellent addition to the school and local community."

CPMG DESIGNED PILOT GOVERNMENT SCHOOL IS COMPLETED

Nottingham based architectural firm CPMG has celebrated the completion of landmark project, Campsmount Technology College. This is the first new school building in the UK to be delivered under Michael Gove's streamlined schools procurement process and has been completed in just 12 months.

CPMG was a member of the design team that won a competition to design the new £10m facility in Doncaster. Working with Wates Construction, CPMG followed revised procurement procedures that sped up and simplified the process cutting the procurement period from 48 weeks to 22.

The duration of the planning process was also significantly reduced with the CPMG team involved in extensive pre-application discussions with the planning department to review the design and identify any possible issues. This allowed planning permission to be granted within 8 weeks, much quicker than the normal 12 week period for dealing with such a major project.

The project included the design of 7,500 sq m of new education facilities comprising the main school building, new access roads and brand new state-of-the-art; multi-use sports pitches, which will be open for community use. CPMG's design presented a new identity for the college, expressing its technology specialism with facilities showcased to a new public approach.

Construction began in February 2011 and has seen Wates deliver the 12-month build programme under the supervision of Doncaster Council, with support from The Department for Education (DfE).

Hugh Avison from CPMG commented; "We're delighted to see this landmark project open its doors, just 12 months since inception. Working to this new approach for the first time has come with its own set of challenges but with a clear strategy in place from the outset we were able to meet all the key milestones. Campsmount is proof that with a proactive and ambitious team in place, streamlined delivery can provide a quality building without compromising on the design and this facility is now the benchmark for others to aspire to."

In April last year, the project was showcased in the Sebastian James Review of Education Capital as a demonstration of how a financial saving of 30% can be achieved in the delivery of new schools.

Phil Harrison, Managing Director for Wates Construction in the North and Midlands commented; "In a time of constrained public spending, the efficient delivery of Campsmount demonstrates the successful adoption of a standardized school design to produce an inspiring learning environment. The completion of the school has been exceedingly rewarding for Wates and has been substantially enriched by our Reshaping Tomorrow agenda, through which we strive to continuously enhance the communities in which we work."

Andy Sprakes, Head Teacher of Campsmount Technology College, commented: "We have come so far in such a short period of time and we are all very excited to be in our brand new school building. It has been wonderful to watch the building take shape and develop into a 21st Century learning environment that will be enjoyed for generations to come."

CPMG has over 30 years experience of designing education facilities across the UK and in Nottingham including; the replacement of Bilborough College and the new state-of- the-art humanities building at the University of Nottingham. Currently the firm is working on four projects in Stoke on Trent which includes CPMG's first new build academy.

March 12

CPMG architects are expanding their successful university portfolio after being appointed as architects and interior designers for the £1.2m refurbishment of the library on Teesside University's Middlesbrough Campus.

CPMG have developed a design that will breathe life into the existing building. A contemporary and engaging learning environment will be created through the use of a vibrant colour palette that will be used to highlight key spaces with the creation of colour coded ‘zones'. Furniture, lighting and graphic identity have also been carefully selected to enhance the impact of each zone and provide a holistic sense of identity throughout the building.

This is the latest in a number of projects CPMG has supported leading UK construction, infrastructure and design company Morgan Sindall on at Teesside University. Previous projects include designing the Centuria South Building on the Middlesbrough Campus and the new five storey state-of-the-art postgraduate and undergraduate learning facility on the Darlington Campus.

Planning has recently been secured for a new £0.5m new building at Marjorie Sherman House, a facility on Sherman Road in Lenton, which is owned and operated by the Ear Foundation, a Nottingham based charitable trust that supports deaf children and adults with cochlear implants and other hearing technologies.

The new building has been designed by CPMG who designed the original building next to the listed Marjorie Sherman House.

The charity's activities have expanded hugely since this was completed in 2000 with over 1000 families accessing their services each year. In order to continue the charity's work of providing activities and support to families, carers and volunteers with deaf or hard of hearing children and also facilitate the expansion of these services, further space was needed.

Designed to match the existing building and also tie in with the original listed building, the new building will provide an additional 250sq/m of space to accommodate two sound-treated rehabilitation rooms, a technology suite, a group therapy room, an information lab and seminar rooms. All the facilities will be family friendly and DDA compliant.

As before, CPMG will be providing full architectural services as well as interior design services to continue the theme of creating a sensitive, yet stimulating environment where deaf children and adults can learn to use the latest hearing technologies in comfortable and friendly surroundings.

January 12

Wates Construction is the contractor for the new Academy, which will be attended by 1,350 students and 130 staff upon completion in summer 2013. Doncaster Council's education build team will deliver the Academy project on behalf of the Academy sponsors in partnership with Wates and supported by Partnerships for Schools (PfS).

The new build, which was designed by CPMG Architects, was planned with future progression in mind. The development will include sport facilities, next generation learning space, dance studio, drama studio and a personalised learning centre, which will allow for the provision of individual care for students as required.

December 11

CPMG have designed the brand new head offices that have recently been completed for Dunelm Group plc at Watermead Business Park in Leicester.

Sustainability was high on the agenda when it came to designing the new offices, with a strong emphasis on creating an energy efficient building with low operating costs.

Particular consideration had to be paid to the orientation of the building and the choice of construction materials as this affects how the building acts environmentally; this careful design approach ensures that the internal working environment for the occupants is neither too hot nor too cold.

The heavy concrete cladding material and the exposed concrete floor and roof structures will create a thermal flywheel effect, smoothing out temperature variations during the day and cooling the building gradually overnight, similarly to how a church remains cool on a hot summer's day.

The all-glass office elevations ensure that the building is flooded with light whilst external electric venetian blinds are fitted to all south facing elevations to keep out glare and the hot summer sun.

In addition mechanical ventilation with heat recovery combined with opening windows was chosen rather than expensive air conditioning; this provides energy savings whilst also ensuring excellent occupier comfort. The building also has "solar stacks" like Victorian chimneys that draw hot air up and out of the building through the roof tops. Large flat roofs areas are available for future installation of photo voltaic panels to produce renewable energy.

"CPMG's design skill has added value to our business and made the HQ for Dunelm Group plc a pleasure to occupy. We recommend CPMG to any occupier or developer," Steve Barton, property director, Dunelm Group PLC.
"We have succeeded in meeting the client's aspirations to create a striking building that is also highly sustainable in its design," said Richard Flisher, director of CPMG. "Staff will enjoy the working environment and Dunelm Group plc will benefit from the building's efficiency and low operating costs."

Bowmer & Kirkland were the contractors on the project, BSP Consulting the geotechnical, structural and civil engineer and CPW LLP, the mechanical and electrical consultants.

October 11

CPMG has designed a new Quayside Pavilion for HMS Belfast in London, part of the IWM Family* and Prestige London.

The new Pavilion has been designed to enhance the visitor experience with improved entrance facilities, a ground floor café and a dramatic rooftop café-bar. It will replace the existing platform with architecture that is more fitting to the surroundings and is intended to attract passers-by along the popular riverside location.

The inviting new entrance will inform visitors about the immersive and engaging HMS Belfast experience. The Pavilion itself is to be built within the footprint of the existing structure and will offer an exciting new retail space and ground floor coffee bar ideal for family visitors. In addition, a dramatic roof top café-bar will allow visitors to enjoy the stunning views of the historic ship and surrounding London landmarks, including Tower Bridge, the Tower of London and City Hall. The redevelopment will also improve access for groups, schools, corporate clients and service deliveries via a new gangway.

HMS Belfast celebrates her fortieth anniversary this year as an iconic London landmark. The ship was first opened to the public on 21 October 1981 - Trafalgar Day - and since then nearly eight million people have explored her nine decks.

CPMG, who also designed The Lord Ashcroft Gallery at IWM London, are leading the redevelopment alongside the project managers Focus. Work is due to begin later this year and it is expected to be completed by Summer 2012.

A building designed by CPMG architects has won the OPUN place award which recognises community engagement in the design brief for a building and also for its natural setting in the recent Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) East Midlands Awards.

The Award went to the Hugh Aston Building, the new £25m faculty of Business and Law at De Montfort University. The building is situated on a strategically important site in Leicester city centre adjacent to the ring road, which had to be re-routed as part of the project, and the historic Magazine Tower. It forms an important gateway to the University campus

Bringing together the Schools of Business and Law under one roof, the new 16,000m2 facility accommodates over two hundred academic and administrative offices, twenty six classrooms, ten lecture theatres and five IT suites. The project also included public squares to the north and west and substantial landscaped spaces.

Hugh Avison from CPMG said "It is really great news that the vision and execution of the Hugh Aston Building, with its startling contribution to the quality of the urban environment in this historic part of Leicester, was recognised so clearly"

As Julie Tanner, Chief Executive of OPUN explained: "The OPUN Place Award was new for the 2011 event, and I'm delighted that this particular building clinched the top accolade. It embodies the principles we strive for at OPUN, in terms of ensuring that well designed places and buildings are fit for purpose and meet the needs of our communities. I'd like to congratulate the winning team - and DMU and architects CPMG in particular - for their achievement."
