Bilborough Sixth Form College, Nottingham
The competition-winning design for Bilborough College sets the new facilities within a parkland setting, with the existing landscaping being enhanced by sensitive planting and remodelling.
Major elements of the design include a stepped amphitheatre, located between the college and the sports hall and a wet land area to create a sustainable draining system within the site.
A key feature of the new building is three linked trapezoidal elements which contain teaching accommodation grouped into six curriculum 'clusters' including visual and performing arts, sciences, humanities and cross-college facilities. Spaces between the clusters contain staircase and toilet facilities.
The teaching clusters are united by a linear street which provides the primary circulation route across the building at each level and also creates areas for informal social activity.
