Leigh Academy, Rainham
The new secondary school accommodates 1,250 students aged 11-19, in a purpose-built campus in Medway. The academy will be operated by the charitable Leigh Academies Trust, and the design of the building is tailored to their broad and balanced technologically rich curriculum, and their focus on enhanced pastoral support.
In particular, the layout creates three self-contained colleges within the overall structure, establishing a more intimate and nurturing environment; a shared central dining atrium creates a dramatic heart space shared by all colleges.
The building massing and elevational treatment was key to securing planning consent on a sensitive greenfield site, and the design capitalises on retained and enhanced landscape features to provide visual screening and a rich ecological setting for the new school.
