The Gym - Olympia Building, Teesside University
Situated over two storeys, ‘The Gym’ is an addition to the existing Olympia sports complex at Teesside University, increasing its sports offer. It includes a new exercise zone, a weights section and a gymnasium area, with additional consultation and treatment rooms. The building’s major rooms are flexible and can function as event spaces outside of gym hours.
The proposals were designed to offer an accessible, legible and welcoming environment for all user groups. The facilities complement the existing Olympia sports hall, creating a more rounded health and wellbeing facility for the campus.
The building’s exterior consists of dark grey brickwork banding at ground floor level, wrapping around the façade. Random strip windows emphasise the movement and activity within the space, whilst retaining some privacy for the users. The upper level is clad with anodised aluminium panels in a contrasting colour and texture. The new extension provides a new public facing landmark and a dynamic addition to the sports building.
