Portland Building Interior Design Masterplan
Following extensive market research and peer surveys, the University of Nottingham’s Student Union has set the framework for ambitious plans to create a new, dynamic hub within the existing Portland Building. We have been appointed to develop an interior design masterplan for the refurbishment and remodeling of the building to be implemented over three successive summer periods.
Re-orientating Portland to address the new heart of the campus is not without its challenges. We need to be sensitive to both the heritage of the original 1950s building and Michael Hopkin’s 2006 extension. The proposals will be developed with the Student Union and will need to be bold, yet sensitive to achieve their aspirations.
The first stage in implementing the ambitious masterplan at Portland Building, Phase I sees the creation of a bold new flexible space supporting the many and varied activities associated with society membership. Formally an underutilised corner of Portland, turning its back on its student population, this new hub revitalises the east wing, reconnecting it with the landscape and creating a new, impressive entrance with identity.
