Project Overview

The Aerospace Integrated Research Centre (AIRC) at Cranfield University will change the future design of aircraft. Located on the perimeter of the airport, the AIRC is a landmark new-build delivered in partnership with Rolls-Royce and Airbus. The building includes open laboratory space with a 40m span capable of housing large airframe integration projects.

Researchers and engineers from Cranfield, and its partner companies, will be working closely together in an open-plan office environment on the top floor.

The building is a strikingly-modern interpretation of a hangar – an appropriate typology for the location. The public face of the building houses a glazed triple-height ideas space with a suspended meeting pod. This will provide a showcase for the university and its partners, accommodating exhibitions and conferencing, as well as informal meeting areas. Adjacent areas introduce space for manufacturers to conduct private research, alongside office space, and meeting rooms for the university research team and partners.

"CPMG's approach to developing this unique building combined flair and individuality which ensures that the spaces within the building really work and are simple to maintain. This project has helped position us at the forefront of aerospace research and training in Europe." - Tracey Flynn, Development Manager
