Project Overview

Branston Locks Primary and Nursery School is a new, purpose built NZCiO (Net Zero Carbon in Operation) facility designed to accommodate 420 primary pupils aged 4–11, along with 52 nursery places at full capacity.

Delivered through a Section 106 Agreement between Staffordshire County Council and Nurton Developments, the school represents a major investment in sustainable, future‑focused education.

A school at the heart of a new community

Operated by the John Taylor Multi‑Academy Trust, the school sits at the centre of the emerging Local Centre, accessed directly from the primary boulevard running through the wider Branston Locks development. As Phase 1 of a masterplan that will deliver over 3,000 new homes, an employment zone and leisure opportunities, the school plays a pivotal role in establishing a strong, connected community identity.

A carefully crafted architectural expression

The outward character of the building has been developed to reflect the high‑quality aspirations of both Nurton Developments and Staffordshire County Council. Its design balances civic presence with a welcoming, child‑centred scale, shaping a clear identity at the heart of the emerging community, while remaining approachable for young learners and families.

Built for performance, longevity and sustainability

As a Net Zero Carbon in Operation building, the school integrates passive design principles, efficient systems and a robust material palette to minimise energy use and ensure long‑term durability. The result is an elegant, resilient environment that supports exceptional teaching and learning while contributing positively to the sustainability goals of the wider development.
