Project Overview

A new build suite of operating theatres located at the Queens Medical Centre Nottingham. The purpose of the project is to provide four new operating theatres, these are located in a constrained site at the hospital courtyard and serving as a decant facility for a suite of the existing theatres whilst they are refurbished to current standards.

The QMC is one of the largest and busiest teaching hospitals in the UK and this fact imposes particular constraints onto the project, leading to the decision to use offsite and modular techniques with only final assembly taking place on the site; this approach increases speed and minimises disruption. Working in close collaboration with the modular contractor ensures that the spatial design is compliant with the HTM / HBN guidance.

The design also exploits opportunities for innovation in surgical methods such as the concept of ‘anaesthetic overlap’, which allows better organisation of the theatre environment and hence greater efficiency in use.
