Project Overview
The new Tulip Academy, Spalding, provides a modern, inclusive environment for 138 pupils aged 11–16 with moderate to severe learning difficulties and autism, enabling them to learn together in integrated classes.
The project consolidates creating a clear physical and functional link between an existing teaching block and new teaching block incorporating a range of facilities. This approach allows the school to grow while maintaining continuity for staff and students.
A welcoming design
A key driver for the design is the creation of a calm, approachable environment that feels comfortable and intuitive for pupils. The new two‑storey building is arranged to support practical and vocational learning, with specialist spaces for Horticulture, Design Technology, Food Technology, Small Animal Care, Art and Design, Computing, Music and Drama, and Science.
Supporting the wider community
Beyond the school day, the building has been planned to support wider community use. Simple zoning allows secure, out‑of‑hours access to key facilities including the Dining Area, Main Hall and Changing Rooms, enabling the school to operate as a vibrant community hub. The Changing Rooms also connect directly to the external sports pitches via an east‑facing entrance, supporting flexible use for local groups and organisations.
Built to last
The proposals combine an elegant architectural form with a robust palette of traditional materials chosen for longevity, ease of maintenance and to complement the existing teaching block to create a unified campus environment. Passive environmental design principles are embedded throughout to enhance comfort, reduce energy consumption and support long‑term performance.
