As part of our Designs that Define series, we caught up with Stuart Vipond, recently promoted Associate and Senior Architect at CPMG, to explore his journey, his expertise in technical delivery, and how his work helps bring CPMG’s design visions to life.

How did you get into architecture, and what brought you to CPMG?
I’ve always had a fascination with building things out of Lego as a child and loved taking things apart to see how they worked. I first joined CPMG as the practice’s first Architectural Technologist placement student back in 2006, and after a period living abroad, I rejoined in 2014. Since then, it’s been an exciting journey contributing to a variety of projects.

You’ve just been promoted to Associate - what does that mean to you?
Professionally, this promotion is a meaningful milestone. It reflects the trust and confidence the Directors have placed in me, and it reinforces that my effort and work ethic have helped steer the practice to where it is today. Personally, it gives me a renewed sense of confidence and purpose, motivating me to continue raising the bar for myself and mentoring others following the same path.

Looking back, is there a project or moment at CPMG that really stands out for you or defines your work?
Being responsible for the technical delivery of Birmingham Airport Air Traffic Control Facility is a highlight. The building’s opening ceremony was featured on BBC News, including the illuminated Olympic rings on the control tower welcoming international athletes flying into the UK.

You have extensive experience in technical delivery - how would you describe what that involves to someone outside the industry?
My role involves taking a design from the initial concept stage to a fully detailed, compliant, and buildable design that is fully coordinated with other disciplines.

What do you find most rewarding about taking projects from concept through to completion?
Seeing drawings and models transition into fully constructed designs that are appreciated and enjoyed by the end users.

Can you share a project where your technical delivery expertise made a real difference to the outcome?
The Canal Turn Development in Nottingham is a great example. My input in technical delivery helped ensure the project ran smoothly and achieved the desired outcome.

Technical delivery often means finding creative solutions to complex challenges - how do you approach problem-solving in your work?
I approach challenges by understanding the issue in the context of design intent, compliance, and buildability. I break challenges down into key technical elements and collaborate closely with consultants and specialists to develop practical, coordinated solutions.

Collaboration plays a huge part in CPMG’s process - how do you work with clients, consultants, and the wider team to achieve the best results?
Clear communication and collaboration are key. I work with the design team to review and coordinate the design, ensuring everyone’s work aligns with the client’s expectations and the design intent. This approach reduces risk, improves buildability, and helps deliver high-quality outcomes.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to move into a technical or delivery-focused role in architecture?
Build a strong understanding of how buildings are actually constructed, not just how they’re designed. Take every opportunity to get involved in technical detailing, coordination with consultants, and especially on-site experience - that’s where practical problem-solving skills develop.

Outside of work, what inspires or influences the way you approach design and delivery?
Observing how buildings are constructed in real life informs my focus on practical, buildable solutions. I’m also inspired by materials, construction methods, and innovative technologies seen on site or in other projects.

Stuart’s expertise in technical delivery, combined with his collaborative approach and precision, is a perfect reflection of CPMG’s Designs that Define ethos - turning ambitious ideas into built reality.

"This promotion is a meaningful milestone. It reflects the trust and confidence the Directors have placed in me, and it reinforces that my effort and work ethic have helped steer the practice to where it is today."
